5 Unconventional Ideas Small Business Owners Can Use to Get Focused and Thrive in a Competitive Market

I don’t know if it’s the moon, some planet stuff, or the spicy chili I ate last night… but I am coming in hot to ask you: Do you truly want to be better than the others?

If the answer is, duh! Then it’s time to stop putting your attention on them and start focusing on you.

My entire career as a consultant has been built around the ability to focus on my clients and building/doing/creating the things to get them to their next level.

When you stop and think about it, hasn’t that been the case for you?

Our ability to find success depends on our ability to focus on the dream, goal, and the baby steps we have to take along the way to get there.

And here’s the truth: Your ability to focus is one of the biggest controllable factors in your own success.

But that’s a GOOD thing – because you can control that! You own your focus! How cool is that?

It’s cool until it’s not and the focus isn’t focusing, right?

If this is where you find yourself today, or in this moment I have 5 weird things you can try and kickstart that focus, so you can slay that thing you need to get done and take that next step!

Ready?

1. Exercise First- Get a Good Sweat Going.

This is my favorite trick when I can’t focus. I work out. I do 50 jumping jacks. I row. I get my body tired enough that my mind can relax and focus.

Try it: Everyone has a specific threshold for tiring out their body, but try moving your body. Dance really hard for 10 minutes. Do some jumping jacks. Go for a run.

Then come back and try that thing

2. Lower the Barriers – Try Doing It for Just One Song Length

I used this trick to get into the habit of exercising – which I still hate doing – but I do it 5-6x a week.

Try it: Lower your expectations and barriers to progress by giving yourself a smaller deadline. Instead of getting the entire thing done – pick a song and commit to doing it for that amount of time.

I use this when I really just want to scroll socials – I commit to just one song.

Sometimes I get through the song and get back on socials.

Sometimes I get through the song and I let the next song play

3. Ask Your Resistance What Is Going On?

This is woo woo, I know – but sometimes that resistance needs you to know why it’s there. If your entire body seems to be against doing this thing and nothing is working, it can’t hurt to try this!

It’s about going inside yourself.

Try it: Close your eyes and ask this question: Why is there so much resistance? What does my resistance want me to know?

You’d be surprised how often you’ll get a response back.

4. Tie Your Ability to Make Progress to Something You Really Want

This is another trick I use to exercise regularly – and I also use it to focus.

I love trashy reality tv – and I can only watch it when I work out.

Try it: So if there’s something you really want – can you only let yourself have it if you work on x, or get x done?

It’s crazy effective – but requires a commitment to integrity – that if you don’t do it – you don’t get the reward.

5. Stare at Some Art – Or Change Your Scenery and Go for a Walk.

Staring at art or changing your scenery is really about giving your brain a break and giving it some extra sensory input so that you can come back refreshed and ready to work on something totally different.

If you find yourself constantly switching from thing to thing – I can help you get organized and focused with your systems and data.

Your data helps you understand what’s worth focusing on, and what you need to say no to.

And the next time you find yourself checking out that competitor’s socials – don’t forget who the real main character is in your story – and get focused!
